Canopies and Gazebos for the Backyard

backyard-canopyBackyard canopies offer an affordable and effective way to protect you and your family from the elements no matter what time of year it is.  They will give your backyard or patio a purposeful gathering area that simply cannot be accomplished with just setting up chairs in the grass.  If your backyard is like mine in a cookie cutter neighborhood, you may not have any mature trees that provide adequate shading.   Choosing the right model for your backyard adds a unique and enjoyable backyard experience that will keep your friends and family comfortable, entertained and building memories that will last for years to come.

So what features are you looking for in a backyard canopy?  Backyard canopies and gazebos come in many different shapes, sizes and design features.  Identifying the features that will meet your needs is very important if you are going to be happy with your choice.  For me the most important feature was the fact that they offered a cost effective way to keep my family and friends out of the rain or scorching sun while enjoying my backyard.  But there are several other features that you should consider before you make your final decision.  Consider these options and features and make a decision for yourself after you determine which options are the most important to you.

Size

Backyard canopies and gazebos come in many different sizes like 10 X 10, 12 X 12, or 12 X 20.  Choosing the right size is very important if your space is limited.  If it does not fit where you need it to go, you definitely will not be happy with your choice.

Shape

Choosing the shape of your canopy is simply a design or décor preference.   The basic shape that most models have is rectangular or square.  Some models are hexagonal or octagonal.  These six or eight sided gazebos offer a unique sense of style that just cannot be offered in a square model.  Choosing one of these models will definitely be a focal point of your party or family gathering.

Portability

What are your portability requirements?  Do you want to be able to take your backyard canopy to the beach or tailgating?  Or are you interested in a permanent fixture in your backyard, decorated with furniture or maybe some string lighting?  Portable models are the most important to me.  I want to be able to set it up in the backyard, a tailgate party, camping or have the option of taking it to a friend’s house for a party or gathering.

Assembly

Many of the permanent models typically include multiple unassembled parts and pieces.  This provides for a stable structure that simply does not allow for easy relocation.  Assembly of the permanent models is usually not too difficult.  It is best to have at least two people and about a 30 minutes or an hour to set them up.  The best portable options are one piece models that are typically referred to as “ez up” or pop up canopies.  This type is my favorite choice, since they offer so much flexibility.

Affordability

The different models and styles range in price from under $100 to well over $500.  Just like with anything else, you get what you pay for.  So make sure that you pick a quality model that will last you at least a few years.  Having said that, high quality portable models are offered between $100 and $200.  In my opinion, these models are the best to choose from if you don’t want to leave your canopy in place all year long.  They are easily stored in your house or garage so you can set it up whenever or where ever you need it, but these models are limited in styling.  You will have to select a permanent, more expensive model to enjoy all of the features that a backyard canopy has to offer.
